I can also build larger displays for shops.
Company History
Being an avid collector myself, over the years
my wife and I have built up a large collection of many items
including anime and movie figurines among many other items.
Like yourselves, I wanted to preserve these items but also have
them on display for us to be able to enjoy every day, without
compromising the condition. After many hours of searching for
customised displays, it was evident that unless I wanted to
pay thousands and get items shipped to me from overseas, then
I would have to settle for second best.
Like many people, I went down the road of flat
pack display cabinets, which are OK, but not what I wanted at
all. They are OK for smaller items, but even they can look a
bit lost in them. There was however, nothing for displaying
larger pieces like busts or large scale models.
Eventually I decided that as no one was making
anything of this nature, then I'd do it myself. So I built two
large display cabinets, with mirrored bases and backs, and shelves
at different heights so I can fit in all of my collectables
of different sizes. Closed behind glass sliding doors they have
been kept dust free ever since. I also made a display case for
a WW2 dagger, passed down to me by my Grandad. This display
lifts over the dagger and slots into a mirrored base, preserving
this very expensive item.
Now, many years later and after a lot of outside
interest, I have decided to make display cases for other people.
I do have some standard shapes and sizes but this is mainly
to give people an instant selection and idea of prices, but
I pride myself on custom making items in order to suit your
requirements. The whole building process is done entirely by
myself from beginning to end with no middleman or subcontractors
to delay proceedings. All contact made to the company comes
directly to me. I feel it is much better to be able to talk
to the person that will be making the items for you.
Benefits Of Glass
There are many reasons as to why I work with
glass and mirror instead of acrylic.
First of all is that acrylic is what it is…
plastic. It may look alright when you first get it, but the
moment you dust it, you will get very fine scratches from the
dust particles and even the slightest bit of light will show
up these scratches. Glass on the other hand is very tough. You
can spill something on glass and remove it with a course washing
up cloth or sponge and it will not damage the glass.
Cost
For me to work with acrylic, not only would
it cost me about four times the price to buy it, but I would
also have to invest in about £100,000 worth of machinery to
work with it and be able to fuse it together. By the time the
end product came to the customer, it would be ridiculously expensive.
I like to keep my prices as low as possible. As a customer and
collector myself, I do not want to be ripped off, so I feel
it is only fare that I treat my customers how I would like to
be treated.
Durability
As I mentioned before, glass is very tough
and can take a lot of punishment. It is understandable that
some people may be cautious about glass, but having worked with
glass for so long, I can assure you that it is very tough. I
tend to make the majority of my items out of standard 4mm and
6mm glass. On some of the larger items I may use toughened glass
but this is dependant on the customers requirements as toughened
glass is more expensive. It may be more appropriate to build
some displays with only certain sections being toughened. I
use standard glass as it is cheaper and if it does ever break,
it will crack, whereas toughened glass explodes.
The Look
Glass looks more solid. It shines and reflects
beautifully and it looks so much more professional than acrylic.
Glass naturally filters out UV, whereas acrylic discolours over
time. I enhance the look of most displays with mirrored bases
and backs so that you can see the full detail of your collectables
without having to remove them.
